In fact, in estuaries, one of the best baits are small live mullet, especially if you want big flathead. Other good baits include live or dead prawns, nippers, worms or fish pieces, like pilchard or tuna.

They are aggressive lure eaters, too. Soft plastic lures, rubber prawns or diving minnows are all very good. Remember that flathead live almost entirely on the bottom so your bait, lure or fly should be very close to the bottom.

From the beach and offshore, fish or squid pieces are excellent bait. Flathead have abrasive teeth so you will need to have fairly heavy line to the hook so that they don't bite you off.
